Zappos Hacked: Protecting Yourself when Shopping Online

So much of our lives is carried out online these days. You can find pretty much anything youre looking for, from vacation deals to comparisons of Medicare Supplement Plans and standard Medicare coverage, from information on prescription drug plans to finding that rare piece of antique furniture youve been trying to track down for decades. As we all know, though, the convenience of online shopping comes with a number of headaches and some pretty serious risks.

One of the latest major online shopping outlets to succumb to hackers is Zappos, the online retailer that deals mainly is shoes and boots. Zappos, now owned by Amazon, has become incredibly popular over the last couple of years, drawing in millions of customers with deals on a range of footwear and gift items. Perhaps due to this rapid growth, Zappos stood as a preferable target for hackers, and earlier this January, the site was hacked, potentially exposing the private information of approximately 24 million customers.

Zappos is just one in a long line of online retailers to be targeted. However, unlike some companies, Zappos reacted quickly, launching their breach response strategy that included among other things, temporarily doing away with their 800-number phone customer service in order to focus solely on customer email concerns about the breach. Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh posted an open letter online to Zappos employees that stated:

The most important focus for us now right now is the safety and security of our customers’ information. Within the next hour, we will begin the process of notifying the 24+ million customer accounts in our database about the incident and help them through the process of choosing a new password for their accounts, adding that the existing customer passwords had been terminated. (from PC World)

While many are applauding the reaction of Zappos, some believe it was a move based on panic and that eliminating current customer passwords would only go further in creating a sense of panic and fear among customers. It still remains to be seen as to what the fallout will be for Zappos. According to Marketing Pilgrim, in a recent poll, Zappos was listed as #3 on overall customer service (Amazon snagged the top spot).

Tips for Protecting Yourself Online
The Zappos breach just reiterates how important it is to take measures to protect yourself when shopping online. Weve covered a number of scams in the past, ranging from Medicare fraud to lottery thieves, but online hacking is something that will not go away. That being the case, there are a few things you can do when shopping online to help ensure that your private data remains private. FoxNews offered several tips for protecting yourself online. Their offerings arent guaranteed methods, but they can go a long way in helping:

  • Use a Tough Password: Most important of all is to create one really difficult password and use it only for your e-mail account.
  • Get a Credit Report: You’re entitled to get at least one free credit report a year, which will tell you if someone has opened a spurious credit card or loan in your name.
  • Update Your Software: Several recent online security studies report that over 90 percent of successful malware and hacking attacks are the result of consumers using old software.
  • Don’t Click That E-mail: Zappos is sending every one of its affected customers a warning e-mail. However, more often than not such “official” e-mails are from hackersI recommend never clicking on links in such e-mails. Instead, open a separate browser window and go directly to, say, your bank’s official site.

Shopping online is a favorite pastime for many of us, and it can be a great way to find deals and tough-to-locate items. Just make sure if you are shopping online, youre taking steps to give yourself the highest level of protection you can get.
